Some martial arts styles include some fancy looking kicks in their techniques many of which put you slightly off balance to perform. For sport fighting this is okay since your life is not at stake should you end up losing your balance during the move. But during a violent attack where your life is on the line ending up on the ground can make it harder to defend yourself. When you learn self defense from a martial arts DVD most of the kicks taught are not flashy and will not place you slightly off balance making them safer techniques to use when fighting for more than just a competition trophy.
With crime continually on the rise self defense is more important than ever and while knowing one of the martial arts styles is helpful everyone should also be prepared for a grappling type of situation. Many attackers do not come out swinging but instead tend to grab and hold on to their victim. This makes the grappling skills taught in close combat training essential so the prey can escape the hold and turn the tables on their attacker to not just defend themselves but take out the bad guy so he learns he messed with the wrong person this time.
