You may think they are but the same but they are actually quite different especially from a legal close combat training standpoint.

If you are walking down an alley and someone demands for your wallet and then attack, protecting yourself is self-defense. In other words, your action is a reaction to a perceived threat. Now that is normal. Who wants to get beat up anyway?

However if you stand there calling the guy names, that is clearly picking a fight. What you are doing is provoking him to attack. You need a good lawyer to get you out of this one.
